Cress is more than just a bit on the side! MacTavish:West proves there’s more to cress than just a pretty face

The problem:  The first large-scale producer of cress and other sprouted seeds in the UK asked MacTavish:West to help them improve the nutritional content of their products and to assist with new product development and marketing.  The crop range included broccoli, cress, herb, onion and pea sprouts. 

The solution:  MacTavish:West undertook a detailed review of the available scientific literature, and identified the key bioactive nutrients for each product.  Analysis of representative samples was undertaken at approved, skilled and independent laboratories.  Reports interpreting these results were prepared for the client, and recommendations were made for other species or treatments which could deliver improved quality. 

Trials examining dried and ground material were managed and overseen, and experienced food industry consultants known to MacTavish:West were brought in to scope out opportunities and new markets.  MacTavish:West led the process of engaging large personal care manufacturers to view the products to examine the potential for a new range of supplements – including reviewing potential other vegetable products which would complement the sprout range. Material Safety Data Sheets and Data Information Sheets were prepared for the dried bioactive material by MacTavish:West. 

Subsequently, a venture capitalist funded company developing new ingredients for supplement blends was identified by MacTavish:West and introduced to the client with a view to development of a sustainable UK-based supply chain.  Development is ongoing.

The result:  The client has successfully developed and launched a range of sprouted seeds and the industry has now matured, with several collaborators and, of course, competitors.
